Ship Andrea Doria and the Italian Navy return to take part in the NATO Naval Electro Magnetic Operations (NEMO) Trials in the Gulf of Cadiz in cooperation with the Spanish Navy.
There are 5 naval assets of the Italian Navy and the Spanish Navy that participated in the NATO Naval Electro Magnetic Operations (NEMO) Trials, held from 1 to 4 November. The exercise took place in the waters of the Gulf of Cadiz under the leadership of COMANDES-31, Capt Gonzalo Leira Neira, embarked on the Spanish frigate Mendez Nunez.
In the training areas of Torregorda and Punta Camarinal, within the Gulf of Cadiz, Nave Andrea Doria and the units of the Spanish Navy have ventured into a series of demanding exercises in the context of the NEMO Trials, one of the most important training activities conducted by NATO in the field of electronic warfare and missile defense of a naval force.
The Andrea Doria has demonstrated its operational readiness for combat by quickly integrating with the aeronaval assets of the Spanish Navy and highlighting its peculiar multirole capabilities of discovery and contrast to the air threat with particular regard to soft-kill reactions.
The training scenario involved the conduct of the activities starting from an initial phase of integration between the participating naval, air and land assets, and then continued with a serial phase that saw the specialized organic teams intensely engaged in anti-missile defense, using soft-kill countermeasures and the launch of decoys in a training context characterized by jamming.
The DA-20 aircraft, equipped with jammers and radar frequency simulators provided by NATO JEWCS (Joint Eletronic Warfare Core Staff), combined with F18 aircraft of the Spanish Air and Space Force (SASF) and AV8B+ of the Spanish Navy, simulated carriers with anti-ship missile capabilities, allowing training in air defense and anti-missile reaction by means of soft-kills in a degraded environment characterized by imitative disturbances and deceptions.
This purely Naval phase was accompanied by an intense activity carried out with the systems located on the ground near Torregorda and Punta Camarinal, where it was possible to test the GPS equipment in the presence of jamming. The exercise represented an extraordinary training opportunity for the staff who, in addition to training in a multinational and multidisciplinary context, were also able to test their systems to their full operational potential, thus enriching their professional baggage with experience and knowledge.
