It will bear the name of Roberto ARINGHIERI, gold medal for maritime valor
The delivery of the new ship of the Coast Guard, “Roberto ARINGHIERI”, the second of a new class of naval units called “Angeli del Mare”, took place yesterday, 28 October, in Messina. The new ships, designed for search and rescue at sea, are dedicated to the personnel of the Corps who lost their lives during the service and who were awarded the gold medal for their high professionalism and sense of duty.
The ship “Roberto ARINGHIERI”, as well as the sister ship “Natale DE GRAZIA”, first in class, responds to the characteristics of a new type of ship conceived and designed to perform the most important task that history and law entrust to the Coast Guard: search and rescue at sea, a mission that the new unit will be able to carry out even in extreme weather and sea conditions.
Excellence of Italian shipbuilding and pride of the seafaring skills of our country, it stands out for being one of the largest SAR (Search and Rescue) ships in the world, as well as the longest “self-righting” and “unsinkable” boat ever built in Italy.
The “Aringhieri”, with its 10 crew, represents the best of today’s naval technology, with advanced propulsion and communication tools. A ship of over 33 meters with an advanced command and control system that ensures greater autonomy, greater accommodation capacity and better logistics for the crew and for the shelter of castaways. It has a top speed of over 31 knots and, at a speed of 28 knots, it guarantees a range of over 1,000 nautical miles.
The ship was built in the Messina factories, by the Cantieri Navali Intermarine spa (Immsi Group) of Sarzana and was built with European funds as part of the Internal Security Funds 2014-2020.“TEMPESTATE MARIS SPE VOLAT“ :”in the storm of the sea fly with hope” is the official motto of the unit, which expresses, thanks to the authority of the Latin language, the sense of belonging to ARINGHIERI Corps, and the legacy to the new generations and to those, like him, they are part of the large crew of the Coast Guard, who work every day at the service of the community.
