From the new “National Operations Room” in Poggio Renatico, all current operations of the Italian Air Force will continue to be directed, coordinated and controlled, with even more reliable performance.
14 fixed workstations, expandable to more than thirty workstations in the event of particularly complex operations or exercises; More functional spaces, specific software for each field of use with even more reliable performance. The new National Operations Room of the NASOC (National Air and Space Operations Centre), which will replace the one in use, can be summarized as follows.
The beating heart and brain of the so-called current Operations of the Armed Forces, in Italy and around the world, the Hall was symbolically inaugurated on Thursday 3 July by Air Force General Silvano Frigerio, Commander of the Air Squad Command (CSA) and 1st Air Region (1RA), who expressed “deep pride and renewed commitment to the mission entrusted to us”.
It is a unique structure of its kind in the Armed Forces and in Italy, for which a multi-year program of work was necessary, conducted by highly specialized technical, logistical and operational personnel from many Air Force departments.
It is from the new “National Operations Room” of Poggio Renatico that – 24/7, 365 days a year – all activities related to the planning of military flights involving the National Airspace, in the areas of Air Defence, Air Transport, Operational Air Traffic, Air Rescue (SAR) and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) will continue to be directed, coordinated and controlled. with the constant support of the Weather component. As happened in the past during the course of the so-called “Great Events”, such as the G7 2024 in Puglia or the recent funeral of Pope Francis and the subsequent enthronement of Pope Leo XIV, the new installation will have the task of watching over the Italian skies.

“Today’s is not just the inauguration of a new operational infrastructure: it is the concrete testimony of the Air Force’s desire to continue to grow, innovate and guarantee the country an increasingly effective and modern service. The new NASOC National Operations Room – said General Frigerio – represents a strategic asset for Defense and confirms the central role of Poggio Renatico in the operations that every day involve men and women of the Italian Air Force, with professionalism and dedication, at the service of national security and have to cope with an increasingly articulated and multifaceted international scenario. In a rapidly changing world, in which challenges are becoming more complex every day, this structure allows us to be ready, reactive, indeed proactive, and up to the responsibilities that our time entrusts to us”.
Great satisfaction also on the part of the Commander of the COA, Air Division General Luca Maineri, who reports to NASOC: “In fact, the Armed Forces has invested considerable resources for this Operations Room in a broader perspective of constant and ever-increasing need for the involvement of air assets in the national and international, coalition or multinational field. We are proud of this new tool available. The “Current Operations” ensured by NASOC are a concrete sign of the silent and constant work of the professionals of the Italian Air Force at the service of the country”. The Aerospace Operations Command (AOC) and, through it, the NASOC, report hierarchically to the CSA-1RA.
