T. Mariotti celebrates a new milestone in the construction process of SDO-SuRS, the new naval unit of the Italian Navy dedicated to special underwater operations and the rescue of damaged submarines.
The hull, built up to the level of the flight deck, was moved last September 8 on the semi-sinking barge Arcalupa of GIN Maritime Operations, through a complex movement maneuver, and then transferred, due to adverse marine weather conditions, on September 16, to the shelter quay – Fusina 3.
After the relocation and mooring of the barge Arcalupa at the sheltered area of the Malamocco mouth, which took place on 20 September 2024, ballasting operations were carried out, concluding with the float-off and relative buoyancy of the MAR 201 construction the following day. Once secured and prepared for towing operations, SDO-SuRS began its transfer for a journey of about 1,100 nautical miles to Genoa, where the docks of the T. Mariotti Shipyard will proceed with the embarkation of the ready-made and prepared superstructures and the completion of the fittings.
SDO-SuRS (MAR201), with a length of 128 meters and a width of 24 meters, was under construction in San Giorgio di Nogaro, in the areas of the Cimolai company, where the Mariotti shipyard has completed several constructions in the past and where it is still building a new unit for ultra-luxury cruises, thanks to a working collaboration that resulted in the CIMAR shipyard, T. Mariotti and Cimolai consolidated infrastructure.
SDO-SuRS, Nave OLTERRA, as it will be called by the Italian Navy, will be able to accommodate up to 200 people on board including crew, technicians and special forces, and will replace the Nave Anteo, in service since 1980. OLTERRA, the first military company of the T. Mariotti shipyard, will be equipped with advanced diving and underwater exploration systems that are almost unique on the international scene, and with new generation submarine rescue assets, representing a unique ship in terms of construction complexity and characteristics of use, consistent with the ongoing expansion of the Italian Navy’s underwater fleet but also capable of ensuring underwater activities in favor of other Administrations/Bodies (dual use) in the surveillance and verification of subsea infrastructures.
