The National Pole of the Underwater Dimension (PNS) – a reality characterized by a marked inter-ministerial identity and animated by cooperation between public and private structures – was created as a response of the Country System to promote, develop, coordinate the synergies of the various national excellences in the sector.
“Diving is a strategic dimension. Defence is a catalyst for bringing together expertise and creating synergies between institutions and private individuals. This Pole will be a national heritage, consolidating the Italian leadership in this area. Many of the country’s vital interests are developed below the surface of the sea. Today we are inaugurating the National Underwater Dimension Hub, an investment to promote cooperation between excellences. The underwater world represents a huge growth potential for Italy. But that’s not all, in La Spezia, the arsenal 5.0 project will start, which will represent a driving force of culture and technology. We need to have the courage to invest and the ability to imagine in order to build our future and that of our children.” This is how Minister Guido Crosetto inaugurated the National Underwater Dimension Hub.
Senator Musumeci, Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies, attended the event stating: “The inauguration of the National Diving Pole is the first step of a long and fascinating journey. The underwater domain is a challenge that can only be won by networking: Navy, academia, scientific community, industry. We must work so that this world, largely unexplored, can become an extraordinary opportunity for Italy, in terms of economy and national security.
We need a strategic plan, new rules and a technical-political table at which the various actors can confront each other. And it is the Interministerial Committee for Sea Policies, which I have already convened for 19 December. The path is traced by the National Plan of the Sea, which for the first time the government wanted to develop as a strategic guide. So let’s all get on the oars.”
“The National Diving Centre could only be born in La Spezia: a leading centre that brings together the excellence of large industry and small businesses, combining the latest research innovations with all the experience of generations of seafarers.
The hub will be invaluable to allow the realities involved to create a system, combining companies with large numbers and capital with small and medium-sized enterprises, all under the large umbrella of the Navy, and allowing the whole territory to consolidate its role at the forefront of the Blue Economy” this is how the President of the Liguria Region welcomed the guests, Dr. Giovanni Toti.
“The National Pole of the Underwater Dimension was born with a strong inter-ministerial identity, and its lifeblood is the cooperation between public and private structures operating in the many fields and specialized areas of diving. The hub aims to generate a broad and participatory ecosystem, capable of enhancing and making the operational, scientific and industrial skills of our country protagonists.
In its operational headquarters, in La Spezia, where there are laboratories, workshops and ample access to the sea, the Pole will be able to combine research, development and experimentation activities, in a formula that is difficult to replicate in other contexts”, concluded the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Enrico Credendino. This new entity will act as an extraordinary incubator of ideas, able to aggregate and capitalize on the valuable skills of the academic, research and industrial worlds. The Hub will be a strategic hub to develop means and skills to explore, learn, defend and enhance the underwater world in a sustainable and conscious way. Much of Italy’s future will depend on this pole.
