Commander Borsini, currently engaged in the Gulf of Guinea for the Gabinia operation, intervened today to rescue the oil tanker B. OCEAN (with Marshall Islands flag and South Korean owner) remained adrift, about 300 miles from the coast, for technical problems with the engines after being attacked by a group of pirates.
A security team of the San Marco Marine Brigade was placed on board the merchant ship by helicopter to verify the situation finding that the pirates tampered with the navigation and communication equipment, robbed the ship of a part of the cargo and the crew of the money and valuables possessed, and then abandoned the ship after causing extensive damage to the engine apparatus.
At this moment a technical team of Nave Borsini is verifying the possibility of restoring the use of propulsion and, where impossible, it has been requested to send offshore tugs to ensure the transfer of the merchant ship to the nearest port (Abidjan – Ivory Coast).
