New step forward for the realization of the Iris constellation of Earth observation that will be entirely built in Italy. D-Orbit, Exprivia, Planetek Italia and Serco Italia have in fact formed the consortium Osiride – Soluzioni Operative per Iride that will produce ideas favoring the birth of startups and innovative approaches for the development of the satellite constellation. Osiride will also extend the benefits to a wide ecosystem of SMEs and startups in all Italian regions, thus guaranteeing innovation and further impetus to the growth of aerospace districts.
The four partner companies of Osiride recall to be specialized and leaders in different segments of the Earth observation sector: D-Orbit of Fino Mornasco, in the province of Como, is specialized in the field of space logistics and transport services, Exprivia of Molfetta, in the province of Bari, in ground systems and business software solutions for public and private customers, Planetek Italia of Bari in the development of services and analytics derived from Earth observation, and Serco Italia of Rome in Earth observation with a long experience in designing and operating infrastructures for the management of satellite data.
Iride is the most important European space programme for low-altitude Earth observation and represents an important component of NextGenerationEU dedicated to the development of space activities, supporting the ecological and digital transition. Iris will be composed of a constellation of 36 satellites of various types and sizes that combine SAR, optical, panchromatic, hyperspectral and infrared sensors. The constellation will be built in Italy and completed by 2026 with the support of ESA and ASI for a total value of 1.3 billion euros allocated under the PNRR and will help the Department of Civil Protection and other administrations to cope with hydrogeological instability and fires, to protect the coasts and to monitor critical infrastructures, air quality and weather conditions.
