There is the underwater robot Pluto Gigas used by the Navy to inspect the seabed, the Hydrone for the maintenance of oil platforms, the FeelHippo and the Zeno for the study of the underwater environment. Then there are the drone-boats such as the Swamp Asv and the CK-14 for hydrographic studies, or the autonomous VR Buoy buoy that can be used in water sports. And there is no shortage of Beluga quadcopter supplied to yachts, along with the SplashDrone 4 amphibious drone and the U-Safe radio-controlled life jacket for rescuing bathers in distress.
These will be some of the protagonists of “Sea Drone Tech Summit 2022”, the third edition of the only congress in Italy on drones and robots for marine and underwater use, which will take place on 25 and 26 October at the Polo Acquatico di Ostia (Rome). The event – which was presented this morning at a press conference in Ostia – is organized by the Ifimedia association and Mediarkè in collaboration with the Roma X Municipality and the Roma Tre University (Department of Engineering and Department of Industrial, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering).
The program of the two days of “Sea Drone Tech Summit 2022” will be divided into 3 conference sessions, for a total of 24 reports dedicated respectively to: drones and underwater robots; surface drone boats; aerial drones for aquatic use. Speakers, among others, will be speakers from the Navy, the Fire Brigade, some CNR Institutes, Saipem/Sonsub, the BIG Cluster, ISME (Interuniversity Center of Integrated Systems for the Marine Environment) and the Universities of Verona, Florence, Roma Sapienza and Roma Tre.
As part of the congress, a large exhibition area will also be set up with the stands of 16 institutions and companies in the sector: Aeromnia, Institute of Sea Engineering of the CNR, Codevintec, Eurolink Systems, ISME, Laser Navigation, MDM Team, Neabotics, Novacavi, Territorial Air Surveillance, SeTeL, Systematics, Cusano University, University of Florence, University of Verona, Versilia Marine Service. Some operational demonstrations of new autonomous and radio-controlled platforms will also be organized, which will take place in the tank at the Ostia Aquatic Pole and at sea at the Naval League of Ostia.

“We are pleased that our city of Ostia hosts, for the second time, this prestigious event dedicated to the most advanced robotic technologies put at the service of those who use the sea especially for work, but also for sport or fun”, said Antonio Caliendo, Councilor for Productive Activities and Tourism of the Municipality of Rome X. “In particular, those projects that involve the use of drones and robots for the control of the marine ecosystem seem to us to be of great interest, water quality and pollution level and also for the rescue at sea of bathers in distress. These are technological solutions that we hope to see soon at work also in our sea”.
“The use of drones and robots in the marine environment is increasingly widespread also in Italy and finds numerous applications, in the scientific, industrial and of course military fields”, underlined Luciano Castro, president of Sea Drone Tech Summit. “These sophisticated means can in fact be used, among other things, for the discovery of wrecks or underwater archaeological parks, to map the seabed, for the control of the marine environment and for the monitoring of large infrastructures such as offshore platforms or underwater pipes and cables. Marine robotics is therefore destined to open a new chapter in the development of the Blue Economy also in our country”.
