Ordinance No. 1,686–EME/CEx was published in the Army Bulletin today, January 9th, approving the guideline for obtaining the medium-height/medium-range anti-aircraft artillery system (EB20-D-04.022) for the Brazilian Army (EB). The objectives of the project are, in addition to obtaining the systems that ensure the anti-aircraft defense capacity of the national territory, to establish short, medium and long-term plans aimed at adapting the infrastructure, training of operators, integrated logistical support, mid-life modernization plans, among others.
In the document, he mentions that a “specific government-to-government international agreement can allow for better financing conditions, terms, maintenance, replacement of handles, and guarantee of support over decades. In a contingency or crisis situation, relying on the direct commitment of another State can offer more security of supply than a purely commercial contract. This is important for critical systems like anti-aircraft artillery, as readiness depends on parts, maintenance and upgrades.”

And he continues, “considering that the EMADS System, of the multinational group MBDA, has an open architecture that has been proven to allow the integration of radars from different origins so that each user uses the radar that best suits their doctrine, as can be seen in the case of the United Kingdom, which uses the EMADS System with radars manufactured by Saab, as well as in the case of Italy itself, which uses an Italian radar model in the Air Force (Kronos Land, from the Leonardo company) and a German radar (X-TAR 3D, from the Rheinmetall company) in the Italian Army. The choice of the Italian EMADS system will provide more security for the achievement of the 2nd phase of obtainment, which foresees that the system acquired to equip the second group of medium-height/medium-range anti-aircraft artillery will be integrated with radars of national origin, when they are ready”.
The EMADS (Enhanced Modular Air Defense Solutions) system offered to EB uses CAMM-ER (Common Anti-air Modular Missile – Extended Range) missiles, which are from the same family as the missiles chosen to equip the Brazilian Navy’s (MB) Tamandaré-Class Frigates, ensuring interoperability within the Armed Forces, facilitating the standardization of procedures for storing and managing ammunition stocks, sharing teams, supplies, and maintenance tools, and favoring economy.
