The ceremony for the delivery of the ship Trieste and the solemn oath of the students of the Naval Academy took place this morning in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Matterella, the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Luciano Antonio Portolano and the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Enrico Credendino.
Two particularly significant moments for the Armed Force, which received a new ship, the Trieste, into its fleet and welcomed 150 students of the first class of the normal courses, who, swearing allegiance to the Italian Republic, became part of the great crew of the Italian Navy.
With the delivery of the Trieste, a multi-role amphibious assault ship, which was built by Fincantieri in the Castellammare di Stabia and Muggiano shipyards, a journey that began about 14 years ago came to an end.
The Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, addressing the students: “This ship is yours, built for you and for our country. For the first time, an officer cadet oath takes place on a military ship. Nave Trieste is the result of the work of thousands of people: engineers, technicians, workers. Only a few nations can build a work of ingenuity and such high technology, which encompasses history, knowledge, advanced technology. But an empty ship is a tool: its heart is you, your values, ideals and spirit of cooperation. Today you swear to serve the country, making once again, as with every oath, our Armed Forces unique and special. To the families I say: for your children, the Defense is your new family and will never leave you”.
During his speech, General Portolano underlined how with the delivery of the Trieste, the Navy is equipped with a symbol of modernity and national technological level, a valuable asset, which will improve our ability to project power and deterrence, in a historical moment, such as the current one, characterized by new and emerging threats to security, also in light of recent events in the Middle East. And addressing the students, he reassured them that, by becoming part of the great family of the Armed Forces, from today they will no longer be alone and that no one will ever be left behind.
Admiral Credendino wished fair winds to the new officers: “Today we proudly experience the great emotion of integrating the Trieste into the fleet, the largest military ship built in Italy since the Second World War, and we have chosen to seal this historic moment with the solemn oath of the officer cadets, many of whom, on this ship, will grow professionally, they will realize their ambitions, they will carry out missions of strategic value for the national interest.”
The CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, Pierroberto Folgiero, during his speech, said: “Today we celebrate a moment of great national pride. This extraordinary result is the result of the strategic vision and manufacturing skills that our country is able to express. With its advanced technological and operational capabilities, this unit not only strengthens Italy’s international projection, but testifies to Fincantieri’s excellence as a reliable and innovative partner for defense.
I would like to thank our workers, who with their commitment and competence have made this goal achievable, and the Navy, for the virtuous collaboration that represents an exemplary model of the country system. Nave Trieste is the tangible symbol of an Italy that looks to the future with determination and ambition.”
Ship Trieste is the largest ship delivered to the Navy since the Second World War with its 245 meters in length, for a total displacement of 37,500 tons, capable of embarking more than a thousand people, the Trieste was designed to perform a wide range of missions. All this thanks to the strong amphibious capacity of the ship guaranteed by a large floodable basin and a dedicated garage to which are added that of an aircraft carrier with the ability to embark V generation aircraft, a logistics platform, a command headquarters and a hospital ship.
