Sea trials are in full swing for the LSS (Logistic Support Ship) Atlante, the new-generation support vessel destined for the Italian Navy. These trials, which are taking place off the Italian coast in the Gulf of Naples, aim to test and validate the ship’s systems and equipment under real-world conditions.
All aspects, from propulsion to integrated communication and combat systems, are being reviewed to ensure the highest level of reliability and performance. In particular, another milestone has now been reached with the successful sea trials for the ship’s Combat System (CS) — a critical step in ensuring the vessel’s readiness for frontline deployment. These evaluations are essential to confirm the functionality, integration, and resilience of the ship’s combat systems, which include surveillance, command and control, and weapons interfaces.
Meanwhile, outfitting activities continue aboard the Atlante, with crews working intensively to complete the installation of on-board apparatus and final systems integration. The shipyard teams remain focused on meeting the target delivery date, scheduled for 2025, when Atlante will officially join the fleet of the Marina Militare Italiana. Once in service, the vessel will provide crucial logistical support, including refueling, medical assistance, and maintenance at sea — essential capabilities to extend the operational reach of Italy’s naval forces.
In the photo, Atlante appears alongside Vulcano, its sister ship, during a recent phase of trials. Atlante was completely built and outfitted at Castellammare di Stabia, while Vulcano was built through a distributed process between several Fincantieri’s Shipyards: Castellammare di Stabia, Riva Trigoso, and Muggiano. Both units are part of an international program conducted in cooperation with France and managed by the OCCAR agency (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement). The joint effort underscores the strategic importance of European collaboration in naval defense.
