The conference on “National Responsive Space: state and prospects” was held on March 29, 2023 at the General Secretariat of Defense and National Directorate of Armaments. The event was organized by the Directorate of Computer Science, Telematics and Advanced Technologies (Teledife), in collaboration with the Order and Foundation of Engineers of the Province of Rome.
The meeting was opened by the institutional greetings of Lieutenant General Angelo Gervasio, Director of Teledife, and Engineer Massimo Cerri, President of the Order of Engineers of the Province of Rome. During the day, representatives of the national and international industry took the floor, including engineers Leonardo Mazzini of Thales Alenia Space, Katia Fabbri of Telespazio spa, Mauro Balduccini of MABA Consulting, Fabio Nichele of Tyvak International, Valerio Di Tana of Argotec, Giovanni Tuccio of Sitael and Captain Dario Sgobbi for the Ministry of Transport.
During the speeches, it was highlighted how Space represents a crossroads between scientific and technological research, foreign policy and security. In fact, the sector is undergoing profound changes, due to multiple initiatives, including by private investors and emerging countries. Ing. Angelo Fontana, of Avio spa, underlined how the first requirement for the Responsive Space is to have a launch capacity that can be quickly mobilized, to offer an optimal choice of the place and the launch “windows”, as well as the orbits.
The conference allowed to open a debate on national systems of access to Space, in particular with the intervention of Brigadier General Giovanni Arseni, head of the II department of Teledife, who moderated the final session, during which a link was also held from Washington with Ing. Giuseppe Ferraioli, of the Astranis company, world leader in the microGeo sector, who provided a solution to the study with the US DoD to ensure a timely response to adverse events. In the hall they also presented Ing. Luigi Ansalone of the Italian Space Agency, who focused his speech on the aspects of responsiveness in Earth observation programs by ASI. In conclusion, it emerged the need to maintain the excellence of the training offer for members of the Order of Engineers and for the entire space community, in order to prepare the next scenarios and strategic approaches in the specific subject.
