An Open Day was held at the NBC Joint School for Defense in Rieti in favor of allied countries, industry, universities and research centers in which the Italian Army presented the results of the first cycle of experimentation on Robotics & Autonomous Systems (RAS) and presented INNOVARMY, the innovation model that will feed the next activities in the field of new technologies.
The RAS Experimentation Campaign originates from the analysis of emerging technologies (EDTs ) and the impact that their use will have on the way military operations are conducted. The experimentation was launched at the beginning of 2022 in order to understand how to take full advantage and make the best use of new technologies in the execution of the fundamental tasks of the Earth Force.
During the first year of experimentation, the Italian Army, supported by the company MILREM Robotics, conducted study activities and exercises – also in a virtual environment – to evaluate the possible benefits deriving from the use of RAS technology in the conduct of tactical activities in an urban environment. The results have made it possible to develop concepts of use and acquire useful information elements, both to guide the strategy of introduction into service of the RAS and to support the general process of capacitive development of the Armed Forces.
Following the development axes indicated by the Chief of Staff of the Army in the concept paper “Army 4.0 Projected into the future”, the next cycle of experimentation will focus on the ability of RAS systems to perform tasks related to distributed logistics and on the possibility of using robotic platforms in the so-called ‘last mile’ of the battlefield. The final event of the first coil was an opportunity to present INNOVARMY, a model of innovation that the Italian Army has decided to apply from the next cycle of experimentation. Through the publication of periodic technological calls, the Armed Forces plans to intercept innovative technologies useful for the solution of the operational problems being studied and facilitate their use.
