The execution phase of the Steadfast Jackal 2022 exercise, aimed at certifying the planning and application capacity of NATO command and control procedures in the configuration of Joint Task Force Headquarters, projected into a crisis scenario, ended in Stavanger, Norway, at the NATO Joint Warfare Centre (JWC).
In particular, as part of the exercise, the NRDC-ITA Command planned and conducted a Non Article 5, Small Joint Operation (SJO), where it operated against fictitious terrorist groups, leveraging the available joint assets in order to coordinate their effects and trying to put into practice the skills acquired during the preparation activity.
Over 700 soldiers involved, partly multinationals from numerous contributing nations, testifying to a synergy characterized by the use of the personnel of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabinieri) with the participation of other Alliance bodies in addition to the “Vittorio Veneto” Division, as Land Tactical Element (LTE) embedded in the Joint Task Force Headquarters (JTF HQ), in compliance with the strategic guidelines issued for the conduct of NATO operations.
In particular, the exercises focused on the effectiveness of the interaction between the operational and tactical levels through the reaction to multiple activations, useful for improving the professional background of the staff and the specific knowledge necessary to complete the configuration of a Joint Headquarters.
In particular, the activity developed some relevant issues, such as the analysis of operational criticalities related to the decision-making process and the exercise of leadership supported by the correct and punctual application of executive procedures by the staff.
Furthermore, as part of the exercise, NRDC-ITA staff was able to consolidate the integration of the various functional areas.
The exercise, which reached its climax on November 30th with the Distinguished Visitors Day which saw the participation, among others, of Stefano Nicoletti, Ambassador of Italy to Norway, of the civil and military leaders of NATO and the Italian Armed Forces, officially certified the capabilities of NRDC-ITA as JTF, ready and effective in projectability in a given crisis area and therefore in the fulfillment of the assigned international mandate. The multinational staff, therefore, has provided an essential impetus to the recent transformation policies of the Alliance, placing itself as a forerunner in the promotion and adoption of innovative Command and Control solutions and procedures, testing their effectiveness in a fictitious complex operational scenario.
