The delivery of “Al Fulk”, the amphibious unit (LPD – Landing Platform Dock) commissioned to Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defense as part of the national naval acquisition program, took place yesterday at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard. This is the latest unit built for the Qatari Navy, in addition to the four corvettes of the “Al Zubarah” class and the two patrol vessels (OPV – Offshore Patrol Vessel) of the “Musherib” class, already delivered to the country.
The ceremony was attended, among others, by the Chief of Staff of the Qatar Navy, Staff Major General Abdulla Bin Hassan Al Sulaiti and the Director of Personnel of the Navy, Admiral Andrea Gueglio, welcomed by the CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, Pierroberto Folgiero and the General Manager of the Naval Ships Division of Fincantieri, Dario Deste.
The LPD unit, built in the Fincantieri shipyards in Palermo and Muggiano, is designed in accordance with the RINAMIL regulation (regulation for the classification of military ships) to ensure extremely efficient land-air-sea connections. Highly flexible, it is capable of carrying out different types of tasks, from humanitarian interventions, AAW/ASuW missions and support of the armed forces and ground operations. The ship has a length of about 143 meters, a width of 21.5 meters and can accommodate about 550 people on board. “Al Fulk” is equipped with a large flight deck capable of accommodating NH90 helicopters, a garage with two driveway ramps and an internal floodable basin capable of accommodating landing vehicles.
