The men and women of the Alpine Italian Army Troops, part of the NATO Battlegroup deployed in Hungary, conducted an important exercise oriented to the “Combined Arms Breaching”
The men and women of the Alpine Troops of the Italian Army, part of the NATO Battlegroup deployed on the south-eastern flank of the Atlantic Alliance as part of the “Enhanced Vigilance Activity” Operation conducted in the week just ended a demanding firing exercise, called Noble Strike, aimed at conducting a “combined arms breaching” that is an operation to force active and passive obstacles positioned by the enemy (minefields and fences) for the subsequent assault on fortified positions.
All the units of the National Contingent based on the Taurinense Alpine Brigade took part in the complex activity, conducted both day and night for over 48 continuous hours, such as riflemen, mortars and sharpshooters of the 3rd Alpini Regiment, spoilers of the 32nd Engineer Regiment, artillerymen of the 1st Mountain Artillery Regiment and knights of the Nice Cavalry Regiment (1st).
The operations connected with the “Combined Arms Breaching” required a perfect synergy and coordination between all the components deployed on the ground.
Each asset has in fact exercised a specific role in the maneuver, from indirect fire sources, such as howitzers and mortars, which hit enemy positions from long distances and created smokescreens to protect the movements of friendly troops from observation, passing through armored units that supported with direct fire the units responsible for forcing enemy obstacles, reaching up to the spoiling units that opened breaches in the opposing defensive lines through the use of explosives and the infantry units that led the assault on the enemy lines. The dynamic and articulated offensive exercise “Noble Strike”, conducted entirely with ordinary ammunition, represented an important step in the training progression of the Italian Contingent and the NATO eVA Battlegroup deployed in Hungary, which, together with the other 7 shielded multinational Battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, it is an integral part of the measures to strengthen the posture of the Atlantic Alliance on the eastern flank, with a mission of deterrence and defense.
