On December 22, 2021, the Italian Government sent the request for a parliamentary opinion on the ministerial decree scheme approving the multi-year program relating to the digitization of Fixed Air Defense Radar (FADR) land-based air defense sensors, the provision of training courses and logistical support for the Italian ‘Air Force.
The program will take place through a digitalization process of some components currently still using analog technology, reducing the logistic footprint of the system and increasing its performance for both the ABT (Air Breathing Target) and the BMD (Ballistic Missile Defense) parts.
The program, expected to start in 2022, will end in 2030.
The national industrial sector mainly concerned, from a technological and innovative point of view, is that of hardware / software development of radar sensors and in particular that linked to new transmitters with GaN (gallium nitride) technology.
The FADRs will be the first sensors to use innovative technologies typical of the next generation AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) sensors. The overall forecast cost for the completion of the program is estimated at € 105.00M.
