The Italian Parliament has approved the acquisition of VULCANO ammunition stocks in the guided version (Guided Long Range – GLR) with inertial navigation and GPS capabilities, capable of ensuring high accuracy against unprotected, fixed, very long-distance targets and in the version with terminal guide assisted by a semi-active laser sensor (Seeker Semi Active Laser – SAL) suitable against slow moving targets, illuminated by an observer in the vicinity of the objective.
In addition, the purchase of portable fire control units was authorized. It is a system / tool (hardware and software), to be used at a tactical level, which is 7 integrated into an architecture of sensors, C2 nodes (Command and Control) and actuators allowing to determine and share, in real time / near real time, the “precise” coordinates of a goal. The VULCANO ammunition is characterized by having a longer range than traditional ammunition and by the remarkable accuracy of the shot.
The acquisition of the “VULCANO” ammunition has industrial repercussions in the national electronics and precision mechanics sector with direct delivery of the LEONARDO Company (Electronics Division) and the Military Plant of Baiano di Spoleto (PG). The ammunition was mainly developed by the national industry (LEONARDO company), with a subsequent contribution from the German company DIEHL limited to the development and integration of the semi-active laser sensor (Seeker Semi Active Laser – SAL).
